LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team dropped its second straight contest since moving to No. 6 in the nation and this one came in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.
The Golden Eagles fell to preseason conference favorite Sonoma State, 4-2, Friday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-2-1, 0-1) gave up a penalty kick just three minutes into the game and had an uphill battle the rest of the way. Sonoma State got a goal with just 1:21 remaining in the first half to break a 2-2 tie and then took a two-goal lead in the 60th minute.
Sonoma State had a 16-13 edge in shots and also had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Tobias Hummel made four saves, while Sonoma State goalie Brook Johnson had six saves.
The Seawolves (2-2-1, 1-0) were awarded a penalty kick in the first three minutes of the game when a Cal State L.A. defender was whistled for a hand ball. Mark Wiedeman did the scoring honors, blasting a shot into the corner of the net.
Cal State L.A. evened it up when
Jason Swope lofted a perfectly-placed throw-in into the box and Hansen soared above the pack and headed it into an open net in the 14
th minute.
Sonoma State regained the lead just three minutes later when Mike Travis made a nice pass to Andrew Bailey in front and he tucked a shot into the right corner.
The Golden Eagles tied it when they were awarded a penalty kick for a Sonoma State hand ball in the box. Sonoma State goalie Brook Johnson made a spectacular save on the try by Massaquoi, but the Cal State L.A. forward hustled to the rebound before anyone else and knocked it into the net to tie the score in the 19th minute.
Sonoma State took the lead for good late in the first half when Nathan Medina headed in a cross by Michael Asaro.
The Seawolves got their final goal early in the second half when Eric Lapon was alone in the right side of the box and knocked home a pass from Travis.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Humboldt State.
